Breast Implant Removal

Breast augmentation is a popular procedure for women who want to enhance their breast size. Although most patients are satisfied with their augmentation, there are some cases in which women may want to remove their implants.

Breast implant removal, also called breast explant surgery, involves removing breast implants along with the scar tissue that has developed around the implant (called the capsule). Patients may seek this surgery for a number of reasons, whether for comfort, aesthetic reasons, or to correct a complication. By removing the implant/s, the surgery aims to correct issues caused by the original breast augmentation surgery.

Who is a good candidate?

Candidates for this procedure are women who are seeking to rectify an issue caused by a past breast augmentation surgery. If you are unhappy with the results of your previous breast augmentation, whether due to complications or aesthetic dissatisfaction, you may be a good candidate. Generally, ideal candidates are physically healthy and non-smokers.

A consultation with Dr Bish Soliman will help determine if you are suitable for surgery. During this meeting, you will discuss your medical history, past surgeries, and what you hope to achieve from breast implant removal surgery. We will then be able to develop a customised treatment plan suited to your body and preferences.

Breast Implant Removal

The procedure

This procedure is performed under general anaesthesia at a fully accredited private hospital. The procedure usually takes two hours to complete. Dr Bish will make incisions in the natural breast crease, taking care to target your previous incision sites to minimise additional scarring. He will then remove the implant through the opening. The surrounding scar tissue that has formed around the implant may also be removed in what is referred to as a capsulectomy or en bloc.

Patients can have implant removal alone or combine it with a replacement or a breast lift. For women who are having their implants replaced, Dr Bish will insert new implants after removing the old ones. He may also need to insert a drain for a day or two to collect any fluid that may accumulate. Your incisions will then be closed with sutures. Patients are usually left with only a thin scar, although it may appear slightly different from the scar after the previous breast surgery.

Aftercare and risks

After your procedure, you may need to stay in the hospital overnight and should have a friend or family member drive you home. It is important to take proper care of your breasts after surgery to promote healthy wound healing. Dr Bish will provide specific instructions on how to care for your breasts during the post-operative period to optimise your recovery. This may include avoiding strenuous activities, wearing a compression bra, and getting plenty of rest.

Like every surgery, breast implant removal comes along with some degree of risk. Complications can include:

  • Bleeding and infection
  • Swelling and bruising
  • Loss of nipple sensation
  • Discolouration
  • Persistent pain
  • Poor or delayed wound healing
  • Thickened or hypertrophicscarring
  • Undesired results
  • Reactions to anaesthesia
  • Further surgery to address issues

Frequently Asked Questions

How much downtime will I need?

Patients who are in good health can usually return to their usual routines after one or two weeks. However, you will need to refrain from vigorous exercise and heavy lifting for six weeks to ensure the breasts have time to fully heal.

Can I replace my implants?

Yes, implant removal and replacement can be performed in order to address complications whilst maintaining the breast enhancement. Alternatively, some patients may seek implant replacement due to a change in preference regarding the size or shape of their breasts.

What is a capsulectomy?

A capsulectomy refers to the removal of hardened scar tissue that has developed around the existing breast implant. Breast implant removal often involves a capsulectomy.

When will I see the results?

It will take some time for the swelling to subside after surgery, and this can vary between patients. Most patients can see the full results of their breast implant removal surgery after two to three months.

Can I have a lift at the same time?

Yes, Dr Bish can perform an implant removal and lift at the same time to reduce breast ptosis or laxity.
