Facial reconstruction is a surgical procedure designed to reshape facial structures, commonly the nose, cheeks, ears, chin, and neck. People who seek this procedure may desire to reconstruct their features after injury, illness, or to change a deformity that has been present from birth. As every patient has different reasons for seeking facial reconstruction, each procedure and outcome will be slightly different. Dr Bish Soliman will take the utmost care in developing an appropriate surgical plan, taking into account the intricacies of facial anatomy and proportions.

Facial ReconstructionWho is a good candidate?

Candidates for facial reconstruction are usually people who have facial injuries, congenital deformities, or who have undergone cancer removal surgery. Whether you are seeking to address aesthetic, functional, or structural issues, this surgery can address both the soft tissue and underlying bone and cartilage to create a more desired facial structure.

The first step towards your reconstructive surgery is your initial consultation. We will thoroughly examine your health and condition to ensure the best approach is taken for your situation. Dr Soliman offers a customised approach to facial reconstruction, using the most modern and advanced techniques to provide quality results.

Facial ReconstructionCommon reasons for surgery

Deformities can result from trauma, injury, congenital defects, cancer, and infections, which can have significant physical, psychological, and social impacts. Facial reconstruction can help patients regain confidence and improve facial function, addressing both structural and aesthetic issues. The surgery can address deformities in the facial skin, fat, muscle, bone, and cartilage as necessary, targeting issues such as:

  • Jaw and cheek fractures
  • Nerve injuries or deep wounds
  • Burns and scarring
  • Reconstruction after cancer surgery
  • Nose and ear reconstruction

Every facial surgery is different depending on the size and location of the affected areas. This means your procedure will be tailored to your individual requirements, and results may vary depending on the procedure details.

Facial ReconstructionThe procedure

The duration of the procedure will depend on the complexity and surgical techniques employed. Facial wounds and lacerations can often be treated under local anaesthesia. For more extensive procedures, a general anaesthetic will be used.

Dr Bish will make the appropriate incisions, then manipulate the soft tissue and bone according to your specific facial deformity or injury. This may involve the use of grafts, skin flaps, or other surgical reconstruction techniques to restore structure and function to the affected area. Reconstruction surgeries can include:

  • Tumour removal and reconstruction
  • Nose surgery
  • Scar revision
  • Soft tissue reconstruction
  • Ear procedures

Facial ReconstructionAfter the surgery

After your facial reconstruction, your surgeon will provide specific, personalised instructions on how to care for the operated site. It is important to follow these instructions, as this will help minimise risks. For example, you will likely need to:

  • Sleep on your back with your head elevated
  • Minimise physical activity and exercise
  • Take prescribed pain medication
  • Keep the operated site clean and dry
  • Maintain a healthy diet
  • Stay hydrated and get plenty of rest

You may have some swelling, redness, and bruising after the procedure, but these symptoms should subside as your body heals. Most patients need to take one or two weeks off work.
